Smick Scholarship

The Alexander A. and Agnes (Odegard) Smick Endowment was established with the WSU Foundation to “encourage either undergraduate or graduate students who intend to pursue an applied course of study in the field of rural community service and development.” The scholarship committee may award one or two scholarships of $1,000 to $1,500 each in December 2007.

Applications will be available in October 2007 and can be picked up in the Community & Rural Sociology office, Wilson-Short 23. Qualifications and deadlines for the Smick Scholarship are listed below.

  1. A student must be nominated by a professor who is aware of the student's interest in this area. The department would like the nominating letter by November 9, 2007.
  2. Nominated students must pick up an application from the department (Wilson-Short 23).
  3. Supporting documents, which are due in the Department of Community and Rural Sociology's office (Wilson-Short 23, zip 4006) by November 27, include:
    • Completed Application
      • On item 8, list the nominating professor as one of your references.
      • On items 9 and 10 we ask you to provide details on your past and future interest in rural community service and development. Please make clear what these interests are, as this will be an important element in selecting the awardee(s).
    • WSU transcript.
    • One additional reference from a second professor.

The committee will make its decision by early December, 2007. If you have any questions about the scholarship, please contact Alice Marong, by phone (509 335-8624) or by email (marong@wsu.edu).
